Mass whale stranding in tasmania - The TASMANIAN MURDER SQUAD

A Tasmanian man and his wife have been strangled on suspicion of leaving two baby calves in the middle of a Tasmanian forest for the "conservationists" to take.

A man and his girlfriend say they were taken from the Tawonga Forest reserve to the forest reserve for conservationists.

But the pair say they were treated like animals, and left naked and covered in mud in the forest reserve.

After the couple were returned to the reserve, they were found on a bushfire-battered bush area near the town of Wirral in Tasmania's north in early March.

They were conscious and breathing in the smoke and no sign of any animals in sight. They also had burns and scrapes to their backs and elbows.

The couple were taken to the bushfire emergency hospital in Alice Springs for treatment.

They were later rushed to Alice Springs Medical Centre in Tasmania's south. They are in critical condition and due for a full and open-heart surgery later in the month.

The family are said to have survived, and will be the main focus of a national investigation.

They have been released on bail with their families unable to speak to the media.

Subdivision planned for mudgee airport and other public areas - report says cost is $200m-$250m

WA Budget has more detailed projections for air quality in major cities, air pollution forecasts have been revised and the Federal Government has committed $200 million for research, planning and funding in the coming years.

Wales Secretary of State Alison Johnstone, who will host the WA Government's Ministerial Meeting on Tuesday, says the budget released at the weekend will see the cost of air pollution and pollution-related risk increase by nearly $120 million per annum over the next three years.

This has been confirmed by figures released by the Health Protection Agency which show that between 2008 and 2014, the total number of patients discharged to hospital due to exposure to particulate matter - or PM2.5 - exceeded 12.8 million.

According to Health Protection Agency data for 2013-2014, the peak year in which air pollution reached a significant level was in June 2012 when 19,700 people, including 19,000 patients, were discharged to hospital with respiratory conditions related to air pollution. The Health Protection Agency said these figures were not representative of the actual number of patients with respiratory conditions in Victoria.

A Department of Health source who asked not to be named said it was not a matter of when but rather of the degree of the rise.

"We expect in the next three years that the average annual decline in the number of patients with respiratory conditions in Victoria due to air pollution in the peak years would hit 10 per cent, which is what we have had in the past three years," he said.

"The overall effect of this would be a 10 per cent decrease in hospital hospital bed counts for the same period but the total cost of air pollution over the same period will likely be $80 million to $110 million."

The Government's National Environmental Policy Forum estimates the total cost of air pollution will average $140 million over the next three years - a rise of $5.2 million if every patient was discharged to hospital in Perth, $20.9 million if every patient was discharged to hospital in Newcastle and $38.1 million if every patient was discharged to hospital in Adelaide.

The Health Protection Agency estimates the increase will be around $60 million but Dr Anthony Jones, head of the public health division at the Western Australia Health Protection Agency, said he did not expect that figure to be accurate because of the number of patients with chronic respiratory conditions which are admitted to the hospital and many of them had other conditions such as allergies.

"If we put that amount (the expected cost increase) across all of the patients the public health budget] that's probably less than 10 per cent of their annual visits to hospital," he said.
