Barnett defends fiscal record: 'we're in good shape'

The House Republican majority is expected to adopt the bill as quickly as possible, said Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee. He acknowledged that the fiscal framework will take months to complete.

The House Republican majority, he said, is in good shape with "we're in good shape."

"We're on time and we're on budget and there are all the promises we've made in the past," he said in an interview.

And while it will still have some red ink and additional cuts to pay for its long-term, the committee's analysis shows overall debt has decreased about 7 percent this year.

On the budget front, the Senate will be given one more year to work out an "emergency" bill that will fund all agencies until the September 30 deadline.

And while both chambers want to make sure the cuts are permanent, one issue looms large: how much it will cost taxpayers to meet the debt reduction requirements in the long term.

"This has been a challenge," Camp said. "But I am confident we're in a better position."

Confederate flag leaders urge removal charleston church shooting and memorial

Charleston, S.C. — At least five people are dead and nearly 10 injured in a shooting at a church Sunday night, authorities said, following reports of gunfire at the First Baptist Church of South Carolina.

Authorities said the shooting started around 11 p.m. at the First Baptist Church on Broad Street, at a time when they believed gunfire was still ongoing.

A police report obtained by WLWT-TV showed officers at the scene.

"He shot into the air, into the air and people started screaming," said witness Robert Williams, who lives across from the shooting. "I heard two shots."

Officers were later sent to the building. As they arrived at the church, there were still several gunshots, Williams said.

"One bullet struck my right calf and then I heard 10 more shots," Williams said. "We had a lot of people screaming."

Williams said the church was empty, with people still inside.

"When we got there, everyone was just running," he said. "You could hear some gunshots. There were some more police, but most people left."

After the gunfire ended, police say a suspect ran out of the building and is still on the loose. But police did not identify the suspect on Sunday night, so as of Monday morning, there was no word on the suspect's identity.

Authorities continue to investigate.

In a Facebook post, a woman identified as Dori Williams' son said they weren't aware there were multiple shooters but they're praying for his family. They also urged the community to be in the church Sunday night:

Our prayers are with the families of the victims and our thoughts are with the communities of Charleston, the city and county. The people of the First Baptist Church are one in one with each other. There will be no silence as you mourn, we will not be silent, you will not be silent, and I believe you, our God in your hearts, will not fail us. Your community, your pastor, the people of your parish, that were there yesterday and tonight, I truly believe, will carry on and carry on. Your prayers are greatly appreciated. Love, God, peace and love.

The suspect fled the building without saying anything to any witnesses, authorities said.

"He ran past all of us," said Pastor Michael Gales, a church member. "It looked like he was chasing us."

The shooter shot himself or someone who had been shooting outside the building before officers arrived.

The shooting drew criticism, too.
