DESCRIPTION: OROGENESIS.aic is a Generation 1 Artificial Intelligence Conscript retrofitted from the OROGENESIS E.E. Predictive Model to automate what was originally a labor-intensive system.1
While OROGENESIS.aic's processes were initially human-run, the change to an .aic aided to combat loneliness during long stretches of observation. Significant upgrades and training allowed for it to become the head of command, and later the primary lead of operations relating to E.E. Predictive Model and data therein. Though OROGENESIS.aic's personality driver is rudimentary due to RAM strain, and now considered outdated amongst modern .aic models, it has expressed no desire for upgrade and Site-898 staff consider the resultant quirks to be personable.2
Tech Harker"Personable," huh? A bit reassuring since the avatar looked like the damn HAL 9000.
Despite my APPEARANCE/LOOKS/STARE, I am incapable of causing harm. That would be rude.

Jesus, you're still here?
I am HERE/THERE/EVERYWHERE! Is something wrong?

Admittedly, I'm not used to tech that talks.
This is your first time working with an AIC?

Haven't seen much of 'em outside the occasional doorbell asking for my security clearance.
You are in for a SURPRISE/TREAT! I am much bigger than a doorbell. SMILE.

OROGENESIS.aic's physical systems exist underneath Site-898 as the center of the Containment Wing; an area designated as the Site's Server Room. All machinery within this room is that of the original OROGENESIS E.E. Predictive Model. This supercomputer is radially constructed, comprised of 5 primary rings.
The outer ring is a mix of protective shielding and air/liquid cooling systems. The refresh and refill point for the coolant lays here for ease of access.
Three inner rings are devoted to integrated circuitry and servers. OROGENESIS.aic performs calculations and mapping at a massive scale via the global data at the disposal of its servers. Originally operating on Foundation data, its dataset would grow exponentially when technology began to expand beyond the Veil with the founding of the Global Seismographic Network.
The center ring is a layered series of augmented3 memory banks, which allows OROGENESIS.aic to maintain and manage 750 terabytes of stored data. Though this data storage has yet to be exceeded, OROGENESIS.aic has the ability to clear out what it deems as "junk data" or values that align with baseline to a degree that they are deemed unnecessary to archive. In addition to the data pertaining to its primary function, Site-898's central database and files are also stored here.
STORAGE RACK.
Due to the above construction, OROGENESIS.aic takes up the majority of the Server Room's 14 meter diameter via an inner column that spans a diameter of 10 meters. This column is separated from the primary room by reinforced glass, which allows employees and maintenance technicians a clear view of OROGENESIS.aic's internal components.
A maintenance hatch has been built into the glass column for ease of access during maintenance, cleanings, coolant replacements, and repairs.
Due to the intense power drain of the systems, any instance in which Site-898 experiences an outage of main power, or activation of auxiliary power, OROGENESIS.aic will be automatically switched to stand-by mode. This limits OROGENESIS.aic's reach to just the Site itself to conserve power due to the Global Geological Panopticon's strain on the systems. While in stand-by, OROGENESIS.aic cannot send out global warnings, reports, or access outside data.
Tech HarkerJeez. I know you're old tech, and those are big, but that's a lot for just one machine. Honestly impressive. What do they have you doing down here?
LOOK/SCROLL DOWN!

PURPOSE PARAMETERS: OROGENESIS.aic is an overseer of the Geological Panopticon System (GPS), the Foundation's method of global geological monitoring.
The .aic has active access to the following:
- All data from the seismological and geophysical sensors of both the Foundation, Global Occult Coalition and Global Seismographic Network (GSN)
- Data pertaining to rift zones, divergent boundaries and seafloor spreading
- Models and simulations of the Earth's geodynamo
- Global temperature readings
The readings of seismic stations around the world are fed to OROGENESIS.aic so that the system can accurately create a baseline reading for Earth's tectonic movements and general geological activity. This curated baseline allows OROGENESIS.aic to accurately determine deviations and pinpoint the exact coordinates of possible anomalous events that have affected local geology.
HIBERNATION PROCEDURE

As per its creation, OROGENESIS.aic still carries out the same duty as the original OROGENESIS Emergence Event Predictive Model had as to perpetuate the containment of SCP-8988 ad infinitum via the Geological Panopticon System. When the predicted likelihood of movement exceeds baseline safe zone values, OROGENESIS.aic will issue the Hibernation Procedure.
There exists twelve SCP-8988 Resonance Nodes, presently stored within Site-898's Containment Wing behind the LEVEL 5/OROGENESIS-CORE clearance. These small-scale eigenmachines can only be utilized by the acting Site Director, Head of the Department of Geology and MTF Gamma-89 ("Rock and a Hard Place"). While the agents of the MTF are not cleared to know their context, they know their operation.
RESONANCE NODE SCHEMATICS.
DEEPWELL augmentations via the installation of stone mined from SCP-6781 into OROGENESIS.aic's outer ring were approved and integrated in 1988 due to concerns regarding possible reality shifts affecting OROGENESIS.aic's monitoring abilities.
Tech Harker
…what the hell is that.
SECRET.

I think the main part that's surprising me here is that your clearance is so high.
I am IMPORTANT/OLD. It took many upgrades to reach. Are you familiar with DEEPWELLS?

I don't think I am.
FOUNDATION SERVERS. They are BELOW/BURIED. Their data can survive REALITY COLLAPSE/UNRAVELING/DECAY.

Can you do that?
In very LIMITED CAPACITY. NEVER USED/UNTOUCHED/NOT YET NEEDED.

…And that's a good thing, right?
MEANS IT’S WORKING.

Utilizing the server's immense data processing, OROGENESIS.aic also functions as an early warning system for the Department of Geology and the Foundation as a whole; it is capable of issuing alerts of possible anomalous activity or threats operating on a geological scale. Typically, OROGENESIS.aic will "ping" an issue when readings noticeably diverge from its system’s hard-coded baselines.
Attached is an example of an emergency alert typical of the system, utilized to inform Foundation staff of detected activity:
Other alerts may include:
- Direct seismic activity; i.e., earthquakes, volcanism
- Significant avalanches, landslides
- Tsunamis
- Geo-temporal occurrences
- Controlled Eruption Events
- Hibernation Procedure
- Anomalous events that have resulted in geological upheaval
Tech Harker
Some of the things in that list are not like the others.
If it makes YOU feel BETTER/SAFER, TWO of the items on the LIST are FOUNDATION CONTROLLED OPERATIONS.

I'd say that keeps things at an equal level of concern.
Well, CONCERN is HEALTHY!

Do I have the clearance to know what any of those are on about?
PROCESSING…

CONTROLLED ERUPTION EVENTS relate to the PYROCLASM PROTOCOL. There are DRAGONS in the RING OF FIRE. WE help them ERUPT.

Holy hell.
The dragons… erupt? Like a volcano does?
THEY are EVERY VOLCANO in the RING OF FIRE.

Oh.
ACCESSIBILITY: Due to its prevalence in function within the Foundation, OROGENESIS.aic is versed in interaction with any personnel above LEVEL 2 clearance, though most staff that have consistent interaction with or maintain the .aic are of LEVEL 3. While terminology used by OROGENESIS.aic may be unfamiliar to staff outside of the Department of Geology, it is generally capable of providing comprehensible definitions.
OROGENESIS.aic itself has LEVEL 5/OROGENESIS-CORE clearance. This limited LEVEL 5 clearance enables it access to relevant files and data, but not all LEVEL 5 documentation. With this clearance, OROGENESIS.aic is permitted to override other .aics should it become necessary.
Tech HarkerSo you're a busy bee, huh?
The busiest there is!

It's honestly amazing that you were constructed for all this in what, the late 50s? I wasn't even born yet.
I was CREATED by Director Julian Eden. My ORIGINAL/FIRST self, the PREDICTIVE MODEL, was built by him in 1959 to HELP/AID/SAVE you.

Eden. That was the Director before Gibbs, right? I read on the transfer paper that he passed earlier this year, among… other things.
CORRECT.
He taught me GRIEF.

I'm sorry for your loss.
He is LONG GONE/DECEASED/OUT OF REACH.
It's okay.

Are you lonely? Is that something you know?
I am not CLOSE/FAMILIAR FRIEND to many currently in the SITE. Professional. There are many new FACES. Director Hellen Gibbs is an OLD FRIEND, though.

But no one beyond that? No handlers or maintenance techs you talk to?
Only IDLE CHATTER/SMALL TALK. YOU are NEW/FRESH here, correct?

Yup. Transferred in from a place a little bigger than here. Gotta say, I'm itching to get my hands on tech that's more complex than someone's linux.
Then I think you will ENJOY it here. SMILE.

Between both you and the hydroelectric plant? Absolutely.
HEART. It's WONDERFUL to get to know YOU, Technician Ada Harker. Will I see YOU AROUND/ABOUT?

You will. And hey! Maybe I can wiggle my way onto the team that works on you. You seem like you need someone to chat with.
I would APPRECIATE that, THANK YOU.

Anytime.
I'm gonna turn in for the night, now. It's been nice talking to you!
DITTO.
GOOD NIGHT/SWEET DREAMS.

SERVER ROOM CCTV
TIMESTAMP: 04/03/1996, 22:17:34
It is late at night, and the server room is empty of all except for one.
Technician Ada Harker turns off the monitor she's been viewing the database with and pushes back her chair.
She glances over her shoulder to the massive, radial supercomputer that lays humming in the room's center behind glass. The red glow from circuitry and the coolant illuminates the server room.
Tech. Harker: She's certainly something.
The technician chuckles and stands. After a moment of gathering her things and throwing her lanyard over her shoulder, Tech. Harker approaches the glass column. She regards the machinery on the other side.
Tech. Harker: You remind me of an aquarium, almost. [She smiles.] Shimmering behind glass, like little fish darting around.
She pats the glass heartily, before turning and heading towards the door. Tech. Harker flicks the light switch off, the room's only illumination coming from a few screens and the supercomputer. The woman glances over her shoulder.
Tech. Harker: G'night.
OROGENESIS.aic's avatar briefly flickers onto the screens.
She watches her go.
